Kenya - Laboratory Program in Rural Health Centers
After having supported an AIDS pilot project of the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) in Tanzania in 1987 and 1988, the GPHF and AMREF agreed in 1991 to work together in Kenya, too.
This cooperation took place in the context of a laboratory program of the AMREF. The objective was to improve diagnostic facilities in two district health centers of this East African country in order to avoid false diagnoses with consequent inadequacies in therapy. The activities focused on the health centers of the towns of Katilu and Isabania.

The GPHF funded the equipment needed for the diagnostic laboratories as well as training seminars for the staff of the health centers. Furthermore, it assumed part of the installation costs for a simple-to-operate and robust power-generation system based on solar energy. The results of this cooperation included the elaboration of the "Practical Manual for Health Centers in Eastern Africa" published in 1995 by the AMREF with financial support of the GPHF
