Mauritania - Integrated Measures for Controlling Tropical Diseases

In 1997 and 1998, the GPHF realiied in Mauritania a pilot project on the integrated control of endemic tropical diseases in cooperation with the World Health Organisation, UNICEF and the Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (German organization for technical cooperation - GTZ). The purpose of this project was to fight malaria, the Guinea worm as well as schistosomiasis and intestinal parasites. The operational area was located in the South of Mauritania in the provinces of Trarza and Brankna north of Senegal.

The objectives of this project were a 50 percent reduction of the morbidity and mortality rates caused by malaria, the complete extermination of the Guinea worm and the permanent reduction in infections caused by schistosomiasis and intestinal parasites. Within the cooperation agreed, the following measures were funded by the GPHF support: the provision of microscopes and laboratory equipment, the training of laboratory assistants, the creation of a documentation center, the realization of epidemiological surveys and the provision of drugs.
