In developing countries, drugs play an important role in health service. With doctors, hospitals and nursing staff frequently lacking completely, drugs are the only help available in many cases. Therefore, developing countries need assistance in drug purchase, storage and distribution. This was the objective of the "Togo Project", which was realized from 1986 to 1990 in cooperation with the Bayerisch-Togoische Gesellschaft (Bavarian-Togolese Society – BTG). The project was successfully concluded with the presentation of a model manual.

The experience gained in the "Togo Project" was used by the GPHF in developing an exemplary manual containing recommendations on drug selection, ordering, storage, consumption control etc. This publication was entitled "Management of Drug Purchasing, Storage and Distribution". It has been made available to the WHO and to numerous relief organizations free of charge so that the "Togo experience" can be applied to comparable projects in other developing countries.
